Search engine optimization is an important practice for all businesses, but a strong SEO strategy can be crucial for a small business’s success. If you’re a small business owner, your SEO strategy can help you bring more business in through your store doors.

But as a small business that only serves a local customer base, you need to ensure your posts are appearing in the right geographic area. This means you need to use a special, local SEO strategy to attract the right audience.

If you’re unsure of how to create a local SEO strategy, here are six tips to keep in mind.

1. Update NAP Information

Your NAP information includes your name, address, and phone number. While this may seem like basic information, if it is inaccurate across your website, social media postings, or other listings, a search engine may not correct the pages.

Double check that your NAP information is correct and accurate throughout each page. In order for the search engine to connect your pages together, your NAP information needs to be exactly the same from page to page. From abbreviations to small details, your NAP information must be consistent.

2. Get Reviews

Online reviews can help your customer base understand if you provide a product or service worth purchasing. It can also tell Google and other search engines whether or not they should recommend your business to their users. If you have more positive reviews, you’ll be more likely to receive a top placement.

Ask your happy customers and clients to leave you a positive review on Yelp, Travel Advisor, Google My Business, or Facebook. Each of these pages is important for your local SEO placement.

3. Get Local Citations

Local citations are another way to boost authority and connect your business to the community you serve. When your company is listed throughout the local citations, the search engine will recognize that you’re part of the community you serve.

Local citations include listings in local directories or a listing on a local website. Reach out to local newspapers, directories, or bloggers in your industry who may be willing to add your name and contact information to their page.

4. Use Local Keywords

Local keywords are another way to connect your service to the community you serve. Adding the area that you work in to your keyword research can give you the boost you need to appear in a local search.

If you serve different towns, cities or areas, you’ll want to create unique pages of content for each site. Including the various locations in your keywords can ensure you appear for each area, regardless of which town the user searches for.

5. Create Social Profiles

Social media profiles allow you to build your presence online quickly and easily. With each post you upload, you’re adding another page of content to your online visibility.

Create at least a Facebook and Twitter profile. Other platforms like Instagram and Pinterest can give you an additional boost if you’re ready for it.

6. Claim Your Google My Business Page

Google wants to keep users on their page as much as possible, meaning they’re more likely to display Google My Business pages first. If you don’t have a Google My Business page, you could be missing out at the top search results slot.

Claim your Google My Business page and update all the necessary information. Be sure to complete the appropriate areas.
