Believe it or not, your local search engine optimization means the world for your global presence. There is no way you will make it past the global filters that Google has in place unless you increase your local search rankings first. Here are some of the ways that you can create a top-notch local search engine strategy and increase your rankings within your locale.

– Research your keywords thoroughly.

Just because you think a particular keyword is relevant to your business does not mean that it is the keyword that you should be using. Because of recent updates to the local search engine algorithm in Google, you may actually need more precise keywords than you had originally thought. There is no way to know without trying a few on your websites. Tracking your keywords in an Excel spreadsheet is a great way to keep up with the different experiments that you will use along the way.

You will also benefit from keeping different lists of keywords in Excel spreadsheets as well. You should not map all of the pages on your website to the same keyword. As a matter of fact, you may benefit by splitting your website into individual pages, marking each with its most appropriate keyword. This may sound complicated, but it will definitely benefit your business in the long run. You may actually be able to increase your ubiquity such that you fill up the entire front page of Google search results with your website.

– Improve your link structure.

Although you may have a good link structure for pre-Pigeon Google, you may have to improve it or your local area. You will need to make sure that all of the anchor text that leads into your website is localized. Try to dissociate your website from any inbound links that come from domains that are not established. You can check the Google PageRank of all of your connected websites online for free. You can use the free Google Disavow tool to move away from any website that you do not want to be associated with.

You can also improve your link structure by connecting all of your pages internally. This not only gives your human visitors a better structure to navigate with, but it makes your website easier to index for the major search engines. In general, if your website is easier to index, then the major search engines will give it more priority in search rankings.

– Optimize your website content.

Not every technique that you will incorporate for local search engine optimization is new. While you are figuring out new keywords and link structures, you must also keep up with the old search engine optimization that you have been doing. All of your content will need to be organized in a way that the major search engines can easily index. However, you have some help now.

Google has accepted a standard for website code structure known as schema. Simply putting your website code in this format will automatically increase your search engine ranking locally. Be advised that will need to rework your keyword structure and your link structure based on the format that schema gives you. However, you will likely come out with a better overall format after you are done with the process.
