SEO Tips for Local Businesses

A local business will need to use a completely different SEO strategy than a larger, national business. Because so much of a local business’s success relies on bringing people into a physical location, local businesses will need to create a strategy that connects their service or products to the area in which they work. To do that, you should consider following these SEO tips for local businesses.
1. Focus on Your City

When a local search is conducted, it may include the “near me” keywords. This means that the searcher is using location software to determine what city they are in or they will include the name of the city that they’re looking for the service. If you don’t create a connection between your company and the city you serve, you won’t appear in the results.

Include your location wherever it comfortably fits. Try to include your location in your domain or put your location in headers of your website. You will also want your NAP information – your name, address, and phone number – to be clearly displayed on each page of your website.
2. Claim Local Websites

Pages like Yelp, Google My Business, and TravelAdvisor can greatly influence the SEO for a local business, so you will want to claim them and take advantage of them. Because many people will go to these pages to read reviews or get a better idea of what the business is like, you will want to include photos, business details, videos, and links to your website on the page.

Treat each local website as a site of its own and an extension of your business website at the same time. For best practices, you should have enough information on these local websites that your potential customer can get all the information they need, but you should still work to push them towards your page.
3. Get Links

To build your SEO strategy, you will want to create a reliable web of links using your website, social media pages, and relevant connections. This means each of your blog posts should have links to reputable companies and posts and you should do what you can to promote the production of links to your page.

Social media is a great way to get more links. With each time someone shares a post of yours on social media, it counts as a link to your page. You can also put links in newsletters or ask for links on websites of partners or local organizations.
4. Reviews, Reviews, Reviews

Reviews encourage other potential customers to come in to your business or can do the opposite and keep them far away. To promote your SEO strategy and show Google you are a business worth recommending, encourage happy customers to leave you reviews.

If you do get a negative review, don’t just ignore it. Take time to address the situation and see if there is a way to rectify the situation. Not only will doing this show customers that you care about providing a great experience, it can transform an unhappy customer.
5. Use Social Media

Staying active on social media is a great way to keep pushing your message and your SEO strategy in quick bursts that won’t overwhelm your followers, fans, and customers. It is also one of the best ways to let people know that there is new content on your website or to remind them of old content, which drives more people to your website.

You will want to post on social media at least a few times a week. Create a strategy for your social posts and stick to it the best you can. You should also see if you can use your SEO keywords in your posts.

If you’re looking to grow your local business, these five SEO tips can be a great place to start.
