Search engine optimization enables users to more easily find your website or content, and this includes users from around the globe who are using a specific query of keywords or phrases that you have focused your content on. However, if you have a local business, such as an automotive center or a dental office, that caters to a geographically localized target audience, you may not want to target a national or global audience. This can make your efforts less effective overall than they could otherwise be. A better idea is to choose local SEO keywords and phrases so that you appeal to a more specific target audience. You can finalize web design with local SEO in mind by following these steps.

Select Geographically Localized Search Terms

The selection of your targeted keywords and phrases is the most important first step to take to complete a local search engine optimization campaign. You may choose broader categories, such as “dentist in Denver.” You may also choose more geographically specific keywords and phrases based on local suburbs close to your venue, such as “Arvada dentist” or “dentist in Boulder.” Consider the geographic areas that your target audience may choose to use when searching for your products or services. Then, research these targeted keywords and phrases so that you can determine which ones may be less targeted by your competition. While you may feel inclined to target coveted or popular keywords and phrases, you generally will realize better results when you choose less commonly targeted phrases.

Include Local Points of Interest

Search engines will rank your webpage according to relevance, and one way to make your content more relevant with local audiences is to include local points of interest in the content. You may even add keyword phrases that incorporate these points of interest in them. For example, you can create a search for a dentist near a point of interest, such as a popular shopping mall or retail strip center. In some cases, they may be geographic points, such as a lake or a river. These are points of interest that your target audience may use to locate businesses in their vicinity, and ranking highly in these searches can be a tremendous benefit for your business.

Follow Accepted SEO Rules

While you may want to incorporate local keywords and phrases into your content, keep in mind that there are accepted SEO rules that you should follow when doing so. For example, search engines may penalize you for stuffing your content with keywords and phrases. With this in mind, you may consider using the keyword phrase in the first and last sentence of the content as well as evenly spaced out approximately every 100 to 150 words. You may also use secondary keyword phrases that are used less frequently, such as once or twice in the entire length of the content, depending on its length. These are just some of the accepted rules for search engine optimization that you can use to generate better results from your efforts, and you can research different rules before creating your content for the best results possible.

Local search engine optimization strategies function in a manner similar to broad SEO strategies, but there are some key differences. You can brainstorm different local reference points that your target audience may use to find your business in a search engine query, and you can research these reference points in conjunction with your industry-specific, product-specific or service-specific keywords to determine the best overall combination of words and phrases to focus your efforts on. By doing so, you may generate superior results from your efforts.
